Cool feature called the SpeechSynthesis Manager appeared in the OSX Jaguar command line tool (Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal).

Type "say" followed by any text you want your mac to speak. Modifiers include:

-v lets you assign a specific voice to the spoken text. There's a full list of availabel voices in System Preferences -> Speech -> Text to Speech -> System Voice

-o outputs the spoken text to an AIF file

-f speaks the content of a file

For example:

say -o HAL.aiff -v Fred "I'm completely operational, and all my circuits are functioning perfectly."
